The world is looking forward to President Obama starting his job. (Bet no one will throw shoes at him!)
And there's the promise that Guantanamo Bay will close. That the world will begin to heal itself. Etc.
Let's not underestimate the damage that Bush can still do in his closing days of his presidency.
He still retains the power to pardon himself and any of his cronies for any of the acts they committed over the last 8 years.
Torture, indefinite detention without charge or trial, rendition, waterboarding.. the list goes on.
I bang on about holding our elected officials accountable for the actions. (Step forward Mrs Deirdre Alden) But just as important as accountability is truth.
The world community has a right to know what actions have been taken over the last eight years in the name of the "war on terror". We may not like what's been done but we need to know, we need to face it as adults and move forward as a community. Those who committed these violations of domestic and international law should be held accountable for their actions.
The Presidents pardon of key players in the "war on terror" would mean that there is at the very least cause for investigations. It is possible that individuals committed actions that were wrong, and perhaps criminal.
The best weapon to use in the war on terror is truth and justice, not lies and abuse.
No journalist would have dared to throw their shoes at Saddam Hussein, so I wouldn't call ability to suppress opposition a good thing.
By the way, your interest in Deirdre (one of your three local councillors) is bordering on the unhinged.
