Re: Muntazer al-Zaidi

Dear Time Magazine

I note you are currently polling opinion for your Person of the Year Award. I’m sure you don’t usually take late entries, but I urge you to consider Muntazer al-Zaidi the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at George Bush. In my mind and in the minds and hearts of millions of others around the world this man’s brave actions deserve all the accolades available.

Despite having a year in which he was kidnapped by Sunni militants and arrested, in error, by US troops Mr al-Zaidi overcame these odds to make a succinct and powerful statement of disgust against a man that has dealt out so much misery to the people of his country and the world. With one gesture this man has united one of the world’s most fractured countries and given the world hope that Iraq may one day unite rather than tear itself apart with sectarian blood letting.

Any man brave enough to stand up in the face of tyranny and fight back, willingly accepting the penalty of imprisonment, deserves praise. To do so without violence in the conventional sense deserves the highest praise of all. Mr al-Zaidi has shown Iraq that the most powerful of statements do not require car bombs, kidnappings, or beatings and this is why I think Mr al-Zidi deserves to win Time Person of the Year.

Kind regards

Benjaminbrum.
