The lady just keeps giving and giving... part of me will be sad to see her dip behind the horizon. She's a gift for bloggers everywhere.
Sarah Palin said in an interview that she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama.
Palin has made an interesting mistake. She thinks that by being in a position of power she can twist her position to prevent "attacks" on her. She's got the first amendment ass backwards. The first amendment is there to protect the press so they can make these "attacks", they can hold people accountable and most of all, they're there to repeat the words that elected officials say so that we can hold them accountable.
She shows some grave ignorance about standard civil liberties and also, more worryingly, seems to be seeking to silence voices that are critical of her by saying that it's unfair and unconstitutional.
The Huffington Post puts it this way "According to Palin, what the Founders intended with the First Amendment was that political candidates for the most powerful offices in the country and Governors of states would be free to say whatever they want without being criticized in the newspapers."
Quite.
