Pointy headed expert from Bucks New University (His name is Ken Smith) says the most common mistakes should be accepted as "variant spellings".
He lists the 10 most commonly misspelt words, which include "arguement" for "argument" and "twelth" for "twelfth".
There's a right way to spell something and a wrong way. I used to hate having to red pen simple common mistakes when marking work. I mentally red pen blogs as I read them, and yes, I judge you if you use bad spelling.
Using Firefox means I can ask it to spell check my typing as I go. It's not hard to check for mistakes.
This rant about poor spelling, however, doesn't extend to neologisms. (Words, terms or phrases that are coined to apply to new concepts, to synthesize pre-existing concepts, or to make older terminology sound more contemporary.)
Eg. Laser, Radar, McJob, meme, metaverse, replicant, genocide, santorum and laundromat. I love that these words never existed before 1940. New words are very very different to badly spelt ones.

I'm with you all the way on this, until it comes to "meme" which I just hate... UGH!
