Yesterday I finally got to see Juno, (it's up for four Oscar nominations- deservedly so).
It's a simple tale of an unplanned pregnancy and the people affected by it.
Juno MacGuff is a sassy, whipsmart girl, played by Ellen Page in one of those so-good-she's-either-brilliant-or-really-like-that-in-real-life performances.
She's wiser beyond her years, slightly jaded by life and makes me wish that I had a friend like her to sit and chew the fat with and listen to music with.
The movie is such a simple story, taking Juno through the following months, her relationship with family, her best friend, and Paulie Bleeker – the dude she hung out with a little too late one night.
The film is so utterly beguiling that by the time the film was over I wanted to go straight back to the start to rediscover these characters all over again.
The characters feel like real people and they're the kind of people I would be happy to hang with. Juno's parents are awesome in how they respond to her news (Alison Janney is wonderful as the dog obsessed step mother).
It's not a sentimental film. The film is shot through with ideas that appeal to me as a person and as a christian. (Note the small c) It's generous, lacking in bitterness (I wish I were less bitter about things) it's hopeful about family, kids, for forgiveness, grace, for people having the capacity to pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and start over again.
Juno is a pro-life, pro-family delight of a film. I'm going to pick up the gorgeous soundtrack soon!
Here's the trailer.

I really liked this movie as well. Ellen Page is fantastic once again but J.K. Simmons just keeps stealing scenes, he's fantastic.
